Gimnazjum im.marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego is located in a nice rural area. It is the only middle school in the commune Psary. At present it numbers 12 classes, in which about three hundreds pupils are taught. Since the beginning the school seeks for various opportunities to introduce the students of 13-16 to the world of science, culture and arts, develop their psycho-physical abilities, promote European dimension in the school curriculum as well as back up the educational role of the family. There is a significant group of children from the nearby orphanage in the school. These children often have very high potential but because of the lack of motivation, they usually need considerable support from the school.They have also very few or no possibilities of encountering other cultures than their own. Their participation in an international project would not only open their eyes to new possibilities, but it would also contribute to the development of their self-confidence and encourage them to gain new knowledge.

Our school actively participates in local community life, as well as in organizing cultural events and country-sightseeing tours. It cooperates with various institutions, local press: conducts classes, civil education, it has rich programme of school events. Youth can broaden their knowledge and skills with additional educational classes and lessons devoted to particular subjects. There is a sports club that functions in the school, choir and European Club. One of the school priorities is teaching foreign languages and mathematics. We have a special workshop devoted to teaching languages and two workshops for teaching information technology. For our classes we form language groups for pupils who have good understanding of English and declare their desire to improve their language competence.

The Varvakeion Experimental Junior High School is one of the historical secondary schools with a living presence in the greater area of Athens. It is a state school of secondary education. As experimental it is required to provide in-service training to the staff of other schools, and undertakes experimental application of new methods of teaching, curricula, books etc. Furthermore, during the school year teachers of the school present especially planned teaching sessions to newly-appointed teachers as well as demonstration lessons to undergraduate and graduate students of University departments. The teaching staff of the school is selected on the basis of formal qualifications and the students of 1st Grade enter the school by lot, a right all graduate students of primary schools across the country have.

With this project our pupils will communicate with pupils from other European Countries, they will know new European cultures, they will improve their capability to use computers, using them in the classroom and for the communication with pupils from other countries, they will see mathematics from another perspective, they will be encouraged to learn English.

Teachers will see new methods of teaching, they will develop I CT-based learning methods. It will help for the development of a European identity for both, pupils and teachers.

Istituto Comprensivo Statale – Monreale – Sicily - Italy

I.C. "Monreale II" is a comprehensive school which includes pre-primary, primary and secondary school. Our school is located in the oldest part of Monreale. The city has about 30 000 inhabitants and is located 5 km south from Palermo. It is on mountains and has a marvelous city view over the capital, and it is also famous for its cathedral which comes from the 1200s. Monreale embraces a territory in which different cultural and economical situations can be found; the population comprehends self- employed workers tradesmen, and craftsmen. Located in an area extraordinarily rich of monuments of historical and artistic interest, our school already offers its students learning activities which have to do with the study of this patrimony. In our school there are some immigrants. Infact the demographic of school population is influenced by the growing number of immigrants coming mainly from North Africa and East Europe. In the school are present pupils with learning difficulty and also social exclusion. Our school organizes a lot of different events and carries on many interesting after-school classes. In that way we want to protect our children from economical and social exclusion.With this project our pupils and teachers will have the possibility to know new european cultures, and new ways of teaching , to know uses, customs, traditions, to learn foreign languages, to improve the quality of the education, to use the computer and to correspond with children of the European countries. As a school, we welcome visitors from all parts of the world and see internationalism as part of our continued professional development. We feel that there is the urge to enlarge our social horizon and to start a process of openness to other European cultures. It is believed that the development of a European identity, alongside the existing ones (the Italian and the regional), could be strongly enhanced through the collaboration with other European partners.
