LESSON4- LARGE NUMBERS
Listen and fiil the gaps in the text of Katie Melua song
There are ......... ....................... bicycles
That's a fact,
It's a thing we can't deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die.
We are ................ .................... light years from the edge,
That's a guess,
No-one can ever say it's true
But I know that I will always be with you.
I'm warmed by the fire of your love everyday
So don't call me a liar,
Just believe everything that I say
There are ........ ......................... people in the world
More or less
and it makes me feel quite small
But you're the one I love the most of all
Place of the commas and dots
The comma is used to separate thousands:
1,000 (one thousand)
45,000 (forty-five thousand)
100,000 (one hundred thousand)
1,000,000 (one million)
The dot is used to separate decimals
4.7 (four point seven)
In English speaking countries
Bilion – 1 000 000 000 ( in Poland miliard)
I HAVE BOUGHT THIS HOUSE FOR TWO MILLION DOLLARS.
MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE SPENT ON NUCLEAR WEAPON.
We don't normally write numbers with words, but it's possible
to do this--and of course this will show how we say the numbers.
(The number 3 147 286 can be written in words as three million, one hundred and forty seven thousand, two hundred and eighty six.)
1011 - one thousand eleven
21011 - twenty-one thousand eleven
721011 - seven hundred twenty-one thousand eleven
3 147 286 - three million, one hundred and forty seven thousand, two hundred and eighty six.
1256721 - one million two hundred fifty-six thousand seven hundred twenty-one
1492638526 - one billion four hundred ninety-two million six hundred thirty-eight thousand five hundred twenty-six
In British English, “one billion” is now understood as one thousand million (1,000,000,000), not a million million (1,000,000,000,000).
